Supervised hours

Building your supervised hours

South Australia asks for 75 hours of supervised driving, including at least 15 at night. If you don't have someone at home who can sit beside you, that requirement can feel impossible. Here's how it works, and how I can help.

The honest maths on the 75 hours

You need at least 75 hours of supervised driving logged, including a minimum of 15 hours at night (defined as between sunset and sunrise). Hours driven with me count toward that total, recorded in your log book like any other. This matters because it's widely misunderstood, so here is the plain version: South Australia has no 3-for-1 scheme. Some states let professional lessons count at a multiplier. South Australia does not. An hour with me counts as 1 hour, exactly like an hour with a parent.

Longer lessons, when you need them

If you'd rather cover more ground in one go, longer lessons are available on request. The price depends on your location and how many hours you book, so get in touch and we'll work out something that suits. It's a good option if you don't have regular access to a supervising driver, or you're working toward a deadline and want to make real progress in a single session rather than stopping after an hour.

Who can supervise you the rest of the time

A qualified supervising driver must have held a current full licence for that class of vehicle for the past 2 years. A learner's permit, provisional or probationary licence doesn't count. If you're not sure whether the person helping you qualifies, ask me and we'll check before you log hours that won't count.

Common questions

No, and be careful with anyone who tells you otherwise. In South Australia there is no multiplier scheme. Time with a Motor Driving Instructor counts at the normal rate, the same as time with a parent or friend who holds a full licence.
